Yesterday evening I
had a trip down to Port Erin, mainly for some aerial pictures with the
setting sun as lighting. My first location was around the beach
area.

Another day, another
beach! On Saturday afternoon I decided that a trip 'out west' to
Niarbyl might be nice. I parked at the top car park by the (still
closed) cafe and took the cliff top path along to Traie Vane, the 'White
Beach'. The pathway is under a long term rehabilitation plan and
whilst areas are great, on the final path down to the beach, many of the
wooden steps have been removed and some of the short boardwalk areas are
badly deteriorated. However, with care it's quite passable. Once
there I decided to take some aerial shots, including of the waterfall,
although those plans had to be altered a bit as will be explained in the
pictures! There's not too much water coming down in the rather dry
spell we are having at present, if you want to see what it looks like in
full flow, have a look at these pictures from January
2024.

I mentioned in yesterday's
post that I had been seduced into visiting the beach again on a hot Friday
afternoon and this was the one I chose, Whitestrand. It's a few miles
north of Peel and not the most accessible, you need to park on the main
road these days and then walk up a lane and down a steep path to get to
the beach.
Mainly aerial pictures
taken flying from the top of the cliffs, but a few flower ones from ground
level on the way back up.

The spell of calm and
very warm weather is continuing and yesterday afternoon I decided that
a beach walk on the west coast might be pleasant. There had been
a lot of sea fog affecting easterly areas of the island but it was clear
skies to the west and I walked from The Cronk, to the north of Ballaugh,
south along the beach to Orrisdale Head, a walk that I hadn't ever done
before. It's around a two and a quarter mile walk in each direction
and the pictures are in three sections, the walk south to Orrisdale Head,
then some aerial pictures there, then the walk back to The Cronk.

Just a couple of pictures
for you today. The first one was a test shot for an intended panorama
of the Viking demonstration at Tynwald Day. I'd found what seemed
to me to be an out of the way spot in the trees where I could include both
them and the audience in the picture and this was a test shot before the
action. Maybe they were going to be throwing axes or something there,
but I was told that I would have to move and stand in the crowd and rather
lost interest at that point as it wasn't the shot that I wanted.
So I've just played
with the test this morning, using one of Paint Shop Pro's '360' tools.

My second picture wasn't
planned, but I happened to be up at 01:55 this morning and noticed that
the waning moon had risen to the north east so though that I'd try a shot.
I'm not into tripods at the best of times so it was just taken hand held
but with the camera braced against a wall.

I mentioned yesterday
that I was hoping to get some aerial pictures of the Tynwald Day celebrations
and here they are! There is always a 'Restriction of Flying' regulation
that covers the whole area when the actual open air sitting of Tynwald
is happening, but fortunately it ends at 13:00 local time so I had an afternoon
visit. Although there are no particular regulations here about flying
overhead people with a sub 250g drone, I still did my best to remain well
clear and I doubt that anybody even noticed the drone.

I was hoping to get
some aerial shots of the Tynwald Day celebrations at St John's yesterday
afternoon, but having done updates to both the 'Fly' control app and the
firmware in the mini drone, I needed to do a quick check test flight first.
I went down to Noble's Park in Douglas and once I had done the low level
checks I took a set of higher level pictures of the town (city :-) ) afterwards.

On Friday afternoon
I had a pickup to do at Ronaldsway, so to avoid the rush hour traffic around
the outskirts of Douglas I left home earlier than I would normally and
had around forty minutes photographing aircraft from the track up to the
'new' radar (still not working!)

Yesterday afternoon
I had to pop out to a local shop for a few items and decided to extend
the trip a bit to take a few pictures of a visiting cruise ship. Whilst
I was on Sea Cliff Road in Onchan I heard a Manx Electric Railway tram
whistling and rushed up to King Edward Road for a photo, and ended up with
these.

On Thursday evening
I had a trip across the island to Peel, the 'Sunset City'. The plan
was to do some more aerial photography in the evening light, then another
flight to capture the actual sunset behind the castle. In the end
it looked like the sun was just going to vanish behind cloud so I scrubbed
the second flight.

Some aerial shots taken
yesterday afternoon at Glen Mooar - the one that's between Peel and Kirkmichael,
not the other one near Glen Maye! The reason for the flight was that
I'd been asked by a representative of the Steam Railway Volunteers for
some aerial shots at a couple of locations on the old Manx Northern Railway
for a 'closed lines' tour that they will be hosting for this year's Transport
Festival, which starts at the end of July and runs into August. As
usual, I also took the opportunity to shoot some more general interest
photos for this website.

Helicopter 'Coastguard
897' came down to Ronaldsway yesterday morning for some training from its
seasonal base at Carlisle. On the way back they routed overhead the
helicopter landing site at Noble's Hospital before passing by my house
and I managed to grab a few shots as they went over.
