In August 1896,
a cable tramway was opened in Douglas, similar to the ones still surviving
in San Francisco, USA. It ran from the bottom of Victoria street to the
top of the town, but closed in 1929 as it was worn out and couldn't compete
with motor buses. This is one of the original cable wheels.
